New dinosaur discovered in Montana Badlands
Unveiling Lokiceratops: Montana’s Dinosaur Discovery
Introducing Lokiceratops:
A remarkable new species of dinosaur, Lokiceratops rangiformis, has been unveiled to the world following its discovery in the Badlands of northern Montana. This plant-eating dinosaur, described as “remarkable,” boasts impressive horns and unique features, offering new insights into the ancient world of horned dinosaurs.
A Land of Dinosaur Discoveries:
Montana’s Badlands, known for their rich fossil record, have yielded another incredible find. The discovery of Lokiceratops adds to the region’s reputation as a treasure trove of dinosaur remains, including the iconic T-Rex. The fossil remains of Lokiceratops were first uncovered in 2019 in the Kennedy Coulee region near the Canadian border.
Horned Dinosaur with a Twist:
Lokiceratops is a member of the horned dinosaurs or ceratopsids. What sets it apart are its impressive and unique horns. Lokiceratops possesses two huge blade-like horns on the back of its frill, the largest ever discovered on a horned dinosaur. These horns curve dramatically, resembling the blades wielded by the Norse god Loki, for whom the dinosaur is named.
Unique Features and Name:
Lokiceratops also stands out for the absence of a nose horn, a feature common among its horned cousins. Instead, it sports a distinct asymmetric spike in the middle of its frill, adding to its unusual appearance. The name Lokiceratops translates to “Loki’s horned face that looks like a caribou,” reflecting both its impressive horns and their similarity to caribou antlers.
A Dinosaur’s Ancient Habitat:
Paleontologists studying Lokiceratops estimate that it inhabited swamps and floodplains in an area known as Laramidia over 78 million years ago. This ancient landscape, now the northern regions of Montana, was home to a diverse array of horned dinosaurs, with Lokiceratops being the largest of its kind during its time.
A Dinosaur Comes to Life:
The fascinating story of Lokiceratops is now on display at the Natural History Museum of Utah. Visitors can explore a reconstruction of its skull and a full-size sculpture, offering a glimpse into the ancient world of these remarkable creatures. The exhibit is a must-see for dinosaur enthusiasts and those curious about Montana’s rich prehistoric past.
