San Diego Area BEACH Closes for Swimming and Surfing After Shark Attack

A stretch of beach in Del Mar, near San Diego, was closed for swimming and surfing after a 46-year-old man was bitten by a shark during a group swim on Sunday morning.

The man suffered significant but non-life-threatening injuries to his torso, left arm, and hand from the shark attack, which occurred around 100 yards offshore near the 17th Street Beach Safety Center.

Lifeguards closed a one-mile stretch of Del Mar beach, from around 6th Street to North Beach, for swimming and surfing as a precaution.

The victim was part of a group of about 12 regular ocean swimmers who meet for training sessions in Del Mar.

While shark attacks are rare in California, experts advise taking precautions like avoiding swimming alone, staying away from areas with signs of marine life activity, and not entering the water if bleeding.

If attacked, they recommend fighting back aggressively and seeking immediate medical attention.

This incident marks the second shark encounter in Del Mar within a year and a half, following a non-fatal attack on a swimmer.
