FIREWORKS MISFIRE TRAGEDY: 8-Year-Old Girl Killed by Illegal Display in Buena Park

REPORT: Police confirmed Saturday that an 8-year-old girl died after she was struck by an illegal fireworks display on the 4th of July in Orange County.

A neighborhood Fourth-of-July show malfunctioned, launching explosive rounds into a nearby home and fatally striking a child—an incident pieced together from multiple local media reports and police statements.

A festive street celebration in Buena Park, California turned catastrophic around 9:45 p.m. when a large illegal fireworks setup suddenly misfired toward a residence on Cornflower Circle. The blast ignited other pyrotechnics stored nearby, and one projectile struck an 8-year-old girl inside the home. She was rushed to a regional trauma center but did not survive.

Investigators say a homeowner placed the display in the roadway; after the malfunction, officers on patrol saw family members frantically carry the wounded child indoors. Authorities later arrested the homeowner, and felony charges are pending review. Bomb-squad technicians seized a “substantial amount” of banned fireworks while fire investigators combed the scene for additional hazards.

Officials urge residents to leave holiday shows to professionals, noting that consumer use of high-powered devices remains illegal in most of Orange County and continues to drive a spike in injuries and deaths nationwide.
