A 74-year-old who was receiving hospice care at a nursing home in Waverly, Nebraska, was pronounced dead by staff at around 9:44 am on Monday.
Her body was then transported to the Butherus-Maser & Love Funeral Home in Lincoln. However, around 11:43 am, a funeral home employee noticed she was still breathing while preparing her body.
Emergency services were immediately called, and she was administered CPR before being taken to a hospital, where she remains alive.
The incident is highly unusual, and an investigation is ongoing by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office. No criminal intent has been found on the part of the nursing home so far.
The sheriff’s office was not initially notified of the woman’s supposed death as it was considered an anticipated death under hospice care, not requiring a coroner’s involvement.
