San Francisco’s Floating House

The house floating across San Francisco Bay was reportedly a houseboat that was being towed from the Docktown Marina in Redwood City to San Rafael.

This was reportedly due to a long-running legal battle between the city of Redwood City and the residents of the Docktown Marina, who had to relocate after the city determined that allowing people to live on floating homes and boats violated state law.

In 2015, a nearby resident and lawyer filed a lawsuit claiming the marina was not allowed on state waterways, leading to a settlement that required the city to remove the 60-80 vessels in the marina.

Over the years, the number of remaining residents dwindled, with only 9 left by July 2023.

The two-story houseboat that was spotted being towed across the bay was reportedly one of the last remaining homes from the Docktown Marina.

Its owner was relocating it to San Rafael after being forced to vacate the Redwood City marina.

The journey was described as “precarious” and the boat was likely not well-suited for open water travel.
