The London Underground is testing real-time AI surveillance tools to spot crime.
The surveillance software, combined with live CCTV footage, aims to detect aggressive behavior, weapons, people falling onto tracks, or fare evasion.
During the trial, more than 44,000 alerts were issued, with 19,000 delivered to station staff in real time. The use of AI in public spaces to detect people’s behaviors, movements, or identities has been increasing in recent years.
The use of computer vision algorithms to track people’s behavior at the station is a new development, and the full details of the trial have been reported following a Freedom of Information Act request.
The London Underground’s plan to expand the use of AI to detect fare evasion to more stations across the city has also been mentioned.
The combination of AI and live video footage to generate real-time alerts for frontline staff is a significant step in using technology for public safety and security.
