KRON4: Cruise ship anchors in San Francisco after mystery illness sickens passengers

According to published reports, a luxury cruise ship, the Queen Victoria, is currently anchored in San Francisco after more than 100 passengers and crew members fell ill during the voyage.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 128 of the ship’s 1,824 passengers and 25 onboard crew members experienced gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting.

The cause of the illness is still unknown, and CDC officials are investigating the outbreak.

In response to the situation, Cunard Cruise Line, the operator of the ship, has increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, isolated ill passengers and crew, and is being monitored by health officials from the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program.

The cruise was scheduled to make a stop in San Francisco before sailing to Hawaii, and it is expected to depart from San Francisco on Wednesday, with the final destination being Honolulu on February 12.

The CDC is closely monitoring the situation, and the cruise line is cooperating with the investigation.
