An avalanche in the Silver Fork area of Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, on Saturday, February 8, 2025, resulted in one fatality and one injury. The incident occurred around 12:48 PM and involved two individuals.
One person managed to escape with a leg injury and was transported to the hospital, while the other individual was found deceased. The victim was located by two bystanders skiing in the area. Both individuals involved were reported to be in their 50’s.

The rescue efforts were complicated by another avalanche above the primary rescue site, which posed significant risks to responders. Due to these dangers, authorities had to pause operations to extract one of the individuals still on the mountain.
The exact circumstances that triggered the avalanche remain unclear.
This marks the fourth avalanche fatality in Utah this winter season.
