In a shocking incident that has left passengers furious and aviation experts alarmed, a Southwest Airlines pilot was arrested at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport for allegedly reporting to work intoxicated. The pilot was scheduled to captain Flight 3772 to Chicago but was removed from duty after a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer reportedly noticed the smell of alcohol during a routine crew screening.
The flight, originally set to depart at 6:05 a.m., was delayed for nearly five hours as Southwest scrambled to find a replacement pilot. Passengers were rebooked on alternative flights, but many expressed outrage over the incident. “It’s terrifying to think someone who might have been drunk could have been flying the plane,” one passenger said.
The pilot was reportedly taken into custody by local law enforcement and charged with driving under the influence (DUI). Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations prohibit pilots from consuming alcohol within eight hours of flying or having a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.04% or higher while on duty.
Authorities have not disclosed Allsop’s BAC at the time of his arrest. Southwest Airlines issued an apology to affected customers and confirmed that Allsop had been removed from duty. “There’s nothing more important than the safety of our employees and customers,” the airline said in a statement. This alarming incident has reignited concerns about pilot accountability and passenger safety, with many calling for stricter oversight in the aviation industry.
