Tattoo Inks May Have Cancer Causing Chemicals Study Shows
Nearly half of the 56 popular tattoo inks analyzed in a recent study were found to contain azo-compounds that can become carcinogenic when exposed to UV light or bacteria.
The study revealed that 23 out of the 56 inks, particularly green and blue ones, had these potentially hazardous compounds. Additionally, many of the inks contained nanoparticles small enough to penetrate cell nuclei, which could trigger cancerous mutations.
While tattoo inks are not specifically regulated in the US, the European Union has already banned the use of two pigments, Blue 15:3 and Green 7, due to their potential to cause cancer or genetic mutations.
The researchers emphasized the lack of knowledge about the actual composition of tattoo inks and the potential risks they pose, as the same pigments used in paints and textiles are often used in tattoo inks without specific safety testing.
