Cybercriminals Targeting Gmail and Google Accounts
Cybercriminals have been launching a new attack targeting Gmail and other Google accounts. The scam involves sending phishing emails that appear to be from contacts, inviting users to view a document on Google Docs.
When users click the link, the hackers are able to bypass two-factor or multi-factor authentication and gain access to the user’s account.
This allows the criminals to change the account’s password, phone number, and two-factor settings, effectively locking the legitimate user out.
Google’s Response and Advice for Users
Google has reportedly warned users about this scam and is working to detect and block suspicious activity.
For users whose accounts have been compromised, Google notes that its automated account recovery process allows users to regain access for up to 7 days after changes are made, as long as the user had set up the proper recovery factors beforehand.
Google reportedly advises users to be vigilant about unfamiliar activity on their accounts and to take immediate steps to secure their accounts if they suspect a breach.
