Marine F-35 Fighter Jet CRASHES Catches Fire Near International Airport

A U.S. Marine Corps F-35B fighter jet crashed shortly after taking off from Kirtland Air Force Base near Albuquerque International Sunport in New Mexico on May 28, 2024.

The pilot, an Air Force officer assigned to the Defense Contract Management Agency, ejected safely but sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized in stable condition.

The jet, a developmental test aircraft reportedly equipped with technology upgrades, caught fire after crashing and was likely a total loss.

The F-35B was reportedly en route from Lockheed Martin’s facilities in Fort Worth, Texas to Edwards Air Force Base in California for additional testing and modifications when it made a refueling stop at Kirtland AFB.

Footage showed the jet in a nose-high attitude just before the crash, suggesting issues during its short takeoff/vertical landing transition.

This incident raised safety concerns about the F-35 program, which has experienced several crashes recently, including another F-35B crash in December 2022 that prompted a temporary grounding.
