Barron’s: Police Say Nearly Perfect DEEPFAKE Scam Video Cost Company $26 Million!

TALK ABOUT A BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE! A worker at a multinational firm in Hong Kong lost $26 million to scammers who used deepfake technology to impersonate senior executives.

The scammers created pre-recorded deepfake videos and used them to emulate the voices of the impersonation targets, luring the employee into following their instructions.

The victim, who worked in the finance department, received video conference calls from someone posing as the firm’s UK-based chief financial officer.

The scammers managed to trick the victim into making 15 transfers totaling $26 million before the incident was reported to the police. The investigations are ongoing, and no arrests have been made so far.

The use of deepfake technology in scams is a growing concern, as it allows scammers to create highly realistic but false audio and video content.

This highlights the potential for deepfakes to be used in various types of fraudulent activities, posing a significant challenge for law enforcement and organizations.
