Recent investigations have revealed that communication devices, specifically cellular modems, have been found in cranes made by a Chinese company and used in U.S. ports, sparking concerns of potential espionage activities.
The House Committee on Homeland Security and the House Select Committee on China conducted the investigation, uncovering these devices on numerous cranes made by the Chinese manufacturer ZPMC.
While the Chinese Communist Party denies allegations of espionage and dismisses fears as paranoid, lawmakers in Washington are alarmed by the national security implications of these devices.
Although there is no concrete evidence of active espionage, the presence of these modems raises significant concerns about potential vulnerabilities in U.S. critical infrastructure.
In response to these findings, President Biden’s administration has initiated plans to invest in U.S.-built port cranes to mitigate the espionage threat posed by these devices in the interim.
