A new drug has been developed to treat mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos exposure.
The drug, ADI-PEG20 (pegargiminase), has shown promising results in a trial, quadrupling three-year survival rates for patients with pleural mesothelioma.
This breakthrough is significant as mesothelioma has one of the lowest cancer survival rates.
The drug is the first of its kind to be successfully combined with chemotherapy in 20 years.
The study was funded by Cancer Research UK and the biotechnology company Polaris Group and involved patients from the UK, US, Australia, Italy, and Taiwan.
