The first known baby photos of a great white shark may have been captured by a drone.
A wildlife filmmaker and University of California Riverside and doctoral student spotted a small white shark with unusually pale coloration near Santa Barbara, California.
They believe they captured evidence of a newborn great white, perhaps only hours or days old. The sighting was published in the journal Environmental Biology of Fishes.
The newborn shark was about 5 feet long and appeared to be shedding its embryonic layer, leading the researchers to believe it was a newborn great white.
This discovery is significant as it provides rare insight into the birth of great white sharks, a phenomenon that has never been observed in the wild before.
