Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has reportedly died in a prison in the Arctic Circle at the age of 47.
Navalny, a prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin, was serving a 19-year jail term on charges widely seen as politically motivated.
He was reported to have “felt unwell” after a walk and almost immediately lost consciousness.
Despite resuscitation attempts, he did not survive. The exact cause of his death is unknown.
Navalny’s reported death will almost certainly draw condemnation and suspicion from the international community.
He had been a significant figure in the opposition to Putin’s government, known for his anti-corruption campaigns and organizing anti-Kremlin protests.
