Two individuals were arrested after dumping red powder on the encasement protecting the U.S. Constitution at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m., and the two individuals were immediately detained by security.
The National Archives Rotunda and galleries were closed soon after the incident.
The two individuals were identified as supporters of a group which fights to stop climate catastrophe by using strict, nonviolent civil disobedience.
The group stated that the action was taken out of love and respect for fellow citizens whose constitutional rights to fresh air, clean water, and healthy food are being affected by what they call the government’s failure to address climate change.
The National Archives building is expected to open on schedule, and there is no information available on the status of the U.S. Constitution document itself or whether only the encasement was affected.
