According to media reports a mysterious cargo ship has capsized off the coast of Tobago, triggering a major oil spill and prompting the Trinidadian government to declare a national emergency.
The abandoned vessel, identified as “The Gulfstream,” ran aground near the Cove Eco-Industrial Estate and overturned, leaking oil that has since reached 15 kilometers (9 miles) of coastline.
The cause of the incident remains unclear, as no distress calls were made and the ship’s crew is unaccounted for.
The oil spill has caused significant environmental damage, impacting Tobago’s pristine beaches and marine life.
A massive cleanup effort is underway, involving government agencies, volunteers, and the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard.
